About Psychotherapy and Art Psychotherapy

Art psychotherapy is a recognized form of psychological treatment that draws on the belief in the innate creative ability of humans. It can take many forms and is highly adaptable to individual needs. It combines art with verbal therapy in which the art made by the client becomes the focal point of the therapeutic discussion. It has been found to be an effective adjunct treatment in many psychological and physical diseases and is offered in many hospitals and social agencies to help patients deal with their illnesses and to foster self-esteem and cope with stress and trauma.

Art psychotherapy is also a recognized form of therapy for those who wish to understand, through self-reflection, why they behave and feel the way they do and wish to alter and more fully understand their behaviours and emotions. It is very helpful for those who suffer from depression and other mood disorders, including anxiety and bipolar spectrum disorder.

Art psychotherapy is particularly helpful for children because it allows them to express their feelings even when they don't have the necessary verbal skills to talk about their experiences. It has been successful in helping children deal with the anxiety and disruption of family breakdowns.

All client sessions are individually designed to meet the particular needs of each client using an integrative model which draws on several strands of psychological thought including Adlerian psychology, Jung-based psychology, metaphor therapy, art therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.
